I’ve been to countless concerts in my years, but only a small handful have managed to leave me completely speechless. Seeing Stevie Wonder perform at Hangout Fest last year was one. Halloween night 2010 at the 30 Seconds to Mars concert was another. And the first time I stood front row for a twenty one pilots show was another. Now added to that list, this past Saturday night at The Hangout with 28 North.

It was clear right from the start that Saturday was going to be no ordinary night of music. Joel Madison Blount and No Sinner (both of whom I’ll write about later) started off the evening with two truly phenomenal sets that really set the tone for what was to be a momentous night of rock and roll. Then 28 North took the stage and things got wild. Highlights include: pulling former Ataris lead guitarist and current Director of Entertainment at The Hangout Chris Swinney on stage for a killer rendition of Sweet Home Alabama; a spontaneous mini-acoustic set with the band sitting on the floor speakers in front of the crowd; fans jumping on stage to dance; No Sinner lead singer Colleen Rennison joining in for a freestyle version of Superstitious; a newlywed couple slow dancing amidst the performers; playing an hour and a half past curfew (the longest a band has ever played that stage); and being interrupted mid-set by Tim from 92ZEW to inform them that the venue had booked them again for another show the next afternoon.

It’s a clich√©, I know, but I swear there was a true magic about that night. The energy flow between the band and the crowd was something you just can’t script; one of those “you had to be there” kind of moments that resonates in your soul and reminds you why you go to see live music in the first place. Go check out lead singer Michael Lindner’s comments on the night in his interview with The Southern Rambler. I can’t put it into words any better than he did.

So because this was such a long, varied and exciting performance, I have a metric ass ton of photos. There are close to 100 from their show Sat night (and would have been even more had I not run out of memory cards) and another 28 from Sunday afternoon’s encore posted in the full gallery, so make sure you go check them out by clicking the link at the beginning of this post.¬†Also make sure you go check out 28 North’s brand spanking new album that comes out TODAY called World On Fire in all the regular places (iTunes, spotify, etc).

Michael, Mark, Shawn, Tyler — if any of you are reading this, I just want to say thank you for a truly unforgettable night. Clearly Alabama adores you and wants you to move in. Or at least buy a vacation house here when you get all big and famous :). Come back again soon. We’ll go fishing.
