Have you ever gone to a show with the intent of staying for just a few songs, having a drink, snapping a handful of photos and heading home at a decent hour, and then 2 hours later find yourself sitting on the well-worn floor of a gritty Irish bar directly in front of the make-shift stage tapping your feet and singing along to the sound of a plucky banjo and an old washboard, wondering if these guys sell vinyl? (They do, by the way). No? Well if you’d come with me to Callaghan’s Irish Social Club this past Tuesday night to see Spirit Family Reunion, you would have done the same thing.

When you attempt to describe Spirit Family Reunion’s music and performance, a lot of words come to mind. Folk. Americana. Revival. Community. Inclusive. Honest. One thing that probably won’t come to mind though is New York City. Formed on the streets of the Big Apple, this quintet sounds as though they’ve spent more time on a rural farm in South Carolina than in a subway station. Despite any initial reservations this southern crowd may have had about a folk group from New York, they were quickly captivated by the homegrown feel of the foot-stomping, hand-claping melodies emitted from five bellowing voices around a single microphone, proving that sometimes the old ways are still the best ways.
