Conventional wisdom advises us to save the best for last, and after 6 weeks of outstanding performances by both local acts and national recording artists during the Countdown to Hangout free concert series at The Hangout in Gulf Shores, it all culminated this past Saturday with the final and most intensely heart-pounding, fist-pumping, foot-stomping evening of music headlined by the incomparable quintet from Nashville, The Wild Feathers.

Sporting a gorgeous bevy of guitars between them, the four vocalists — Taylor, Ricky, Joel, and Preston — line up single file across the stage to present a strong, unified front to the audience. Backed by drummer Ben Dumas, the effect their positioning has on stage is one of staggering power. The Wild Feathers’ aggressive playing style and uniquely blended vocals blasts the audience with pure rock-and-roll energy from the opening chord to the finale. Individually, each¬†singer’s talent could more than sufficiently carry a full band on their own, but when brought together their varied voices compliment rather than compete and what results is uncommonly superb.¬†It’s impossible not to get completely swept up in their performance, as evidenced by the packed house of enthused fans, many of whom had been anticipating the group’s return to this area for months after their killer show at Soul Kitchen in Mobile this past January. And holy hell did they ever live up to the expectations.

On a personal note, these guys are towards the top of my list of favorite musicians touring today. I can’t count how many times I’ve listened to their debut album and it just never, ever gets old. I knew going into this show that it was going to be one of the most challenging for me to shoot because of the temptation to sing and dance along and I fully admit to succumbing to that temptation towards the end of the performance when I found myself front and center stage. Had I been covering this event for anyone other than myself I would have kept focus for longer, but honestly I was relieved when I was finally able to indulge my fangirl side. The Wild Feathers are just too good to resist.

I have to give a quick shout out and congratulations to Tim, LeeAnn, and the rest of the 92ZEW crew along with The Hangout staff, the folks at Meyer Vacation Rentals, Bud Light and Maloney Frost for organizing and sponsoring such a successful 6 week series of fantastic music. It never ceases to amaze me how you guys can bring such high caliber acts to this relatively small town, especially for FREE to the public. I just want you to know, as an avid fan of good live music, how truly grateful I am. I can’t wait to rock out with you guys during next year’s run-up to the fest!

The Wild Feathers are the best new band I’ve seen in the last 5 years. They have wowed the audience every time I’ve seen them. Great pictures as well.

Oh hell those are great photos of The Wild Feathers. Captured live. That is the best way to see them lettin’ loose. Great job.
