A storm rolled through the gulf coast of Alabama on Wednesday afternoon, May 14th, and brought with it a cool front, dropping the forecasted highs for the coming weekend to the mid-70s/low-80s. With a light breeze, white sand beaches, clear gulf waters, and not a cloud in the sky, the scene that awaited travelers to the 5th annual Hangout Music Festival on Thursday was, in a word, paradise.

40,000 concertgoers from over 50 different countries descended on the small beach town of Gulf Shores, AL last weekend for what has become one of the premier music festivals in America. With 2 of the 6 stages in the sand, thousands of palm trees lining the festival’s perimeter, food options that include gulf-caught shrimp, crab, and oysters, a wedding chapel on the beach, and nearly 90 acts scheduled over 4 days encompassing rock, alternative, funk, hip-hop, electronica, indie, country, soul, latin, blues, jazz, and reggae, there is truly nothing else like it on the planet.

That’s why when I got the message Tuesday afternoon that I was being given credentials to photograph this one-of-a-kind event that started in less than 48 hours, I straight up flipped my shit. After the initial bout of disbelief that I’d be shooting the likes of Outkast (OUTKAST, y’all), The Black Keys (dude…), Matt and Kim (who I’ve been waiting for over 3 years just to see live), Fitz and the Tantrums (*swoon*), and as many other incredible performers as my little legs would support me for over the course of 4 full days, came the realization that Oh Crap I don’t have the gear for this!! I scrambled to overnight an extra camera body, lens and a couple high-capacity memory cards from a rental company, which of course despite my best efforts didn’t show up until Friday morning anyway. After the panic settled, I would say then the reality of just how huge of an opportunity this was set in but honestly I still don’t think it’s set in. A week later and if I didn’t have the photos to prove it I’d still swear it was just a dream.

Speaking on photos, let’s get to them shall we? The Thursday Kick-Off Party was a mini-festival all it’s own with 12 acts over 3 stages including Go Down Moses, Magic Man, Jamestown Revival, Bombay Bicycle Club, Danny Brown, Wolfmother, Dumpstaphunk, and Girl Talk. This proved to be a good warmup day for me as I got used to shooting the standard three song limit in the confines of a crowded photo pit being shared with video crews and huge concrete tracks. All the other photographers I met were extremely nice folks and a pleasure to share the pit with, I was really impressed given the magnitude of this festival and the pressure that was riding on the shoulders of a lot of those shooters. They could have been dismissive or rude to me being a relative newcomer to the concert photography scene and shooting for a small local media outlet but nearly everyone was friendly and respectful. It just makes it that much more enjoyable for everyone when the pit is devoid of assholes.

Below is a small selection of a few of my favorite images from the day, but make sure to click the link at the top of this post to see the full 100+ photos posted in the full gallery. And stay tuned for LOTS more photos from the rest of Hangout Fest weekend!
