Well, evidently Vance Joy + 92ZEW free concert series = Mobile comes out in droves. From the time the doors opened at Soul Kitchen yesterday evening until the show ended just under 2 hours later, there was a consistently long line of people winding down the sidewalk waiting to get in. Even as the band sang their hit single Riptide to close out the set, people continued to spill into the venue and snake their way around the back and into the second room that had to be opened to accommodate the unexpected masses.

Fresh off his debut Bonnarroo performance this past weekend, Aussie native James Keogh (more commonly referred to by his stage name Vance Joy) dusted off the dirt and grit of the farm only to get a taste of our sweltering gulf coast heat and humidity as he and his 3 bandmates sweated out a short 45 minute set that left the soaked crowd thirsting for more. Keogh didn’t seem to mind terribly, commenting on the “nice heat” in the room. In fact all 4 musicians seemed to be enjoying themselves quite a bit — perhaps the worldwide success of their first EP God Loves You When You’re Smiling that’s resulted in an impressive showing among the major American music festivals this year and a summer UK tour is making it hard to get their spirits down. I mean who could blame them.
